Sundara is shaken by her dream of Solonor and privately confides in Varrick about what she saw. He reassures her and urges caution, advising they stay the course to avoid falling into any traps set by Benzosia.
The group continues their search for more information related to the names on the keystone and heads to a village to the south. After a brief skirmish with hostile forces, Varrick steps into a portal, and the rest of the group quickly follows. On the other side, they are thrust into a battle against serpent creatures and priests.
During the fight, one of the serpent priests grabs Varrick and flies into the sky, surrounding them in an anti-magic field as they fall. Varrick narrowly survives the deadly plummet. In the chaos, Cassius’s portable hole is torn open, scattering its contents, including Vale’s soul. Allara notes that the soul has now found a new vessel.
After the battle, Sundara attunes to a pair of cursed golden bracelets. Varrick sends her to consult with Allara to better understand the nature of the curse, while he and Cassius examine a series of ancient tapestries nearby. The woven images and verses depict significant, disturbing symbolism:
- Two serpents—one light and one dark—are shown as equals, tearing at the fabric of the world.
- A sky serpent falls upside down, its wings ripped off, entwined with another missing its tail but covered in appendages.
- A dark serpent clutches a massive spire jutting from the sea, then descends into the ocean. With one claw, it carves into the abyss, bleeding as it disappears. This creature, an Oberith, appears alien, kraken-like, with too many limbs and a grotesque form.
- As Varrick studies the tapestry’s deep black threads, he is filled with the unsettling certainty that something in the darkness is staring back.
When the first demons gazed into the abyss, something even older stared back.
As the party begins to regroup, they witness multiple massive volcanic eruptions in the distance, in the direction of the Fire Fingers. Ash billows into the sky, and the earth rumbles beneath them. Distant lights suggest that Benzosia’s ritual nears completion—and the group realizes they are nearly out of time.
