Backstory
Varrick was adopted as a baby by dwarf parents, who found him abandoned on a boat. He knows nothing about his birth parents.
He was involved with various groups, including one with Barrel Back Bill, and later married Sarah Stoneheart, with whom he had a son, Atlas. Atlas was tragically killed by a mage named Elhorn, who cast lightning in a tavern. This loss sent Varrick down a dark path, leading him to abandon his past connections and associate with the shady people of the Undertavern. Varrick became skilled in torture and dealing with magic users.
Varrick eventually ended up in Ironford Prison alongside Cassius and Japheth after being caught breaking into Oswald Beaumont’s manor. He later learned that Sarah and him had a daughter together that she kept hidden from him for 9 years, Natasha Stoneheart, due to his instability.
Prior Events
Dealt the killing blow to Oswald Beaumont (Session 21).
In a fit of rage while cursed, Varrick attacked Sundara but later apologized and vowed to regain her trust (Session 25).
Sacrificed being remembered as a husband and a father for more power. Only he remembered being married and being the father to his late son and living daughter. (Session 29). He did this so that the powerful enemies they make along they way can’t target Sarah and Natasha, although he didn’t know that he was specifically joining The Circle of Ruin and Thistle. He was subsequently initiated in a battle to the death against Serpa (Session 30), and after his death he was revived. The Circle states that this process of being reborn through The World Tree connects them all. There appears to be some connection between joining the Circle, The Harbinger, and possibly The World Tree, but that is unknown currently. Later Varrick killed Melania the holder of his pact and most of the witches in her coven, he required the assistance of Heskell to completely dissolve the coven, freeing him entirely from The Circle.
Fought toe-to-toe with a young green dragon and held his own but was ultimately killed after being dropped 190ft (Session 32). While in the afterlife, Melana, The Queen of Rot, dug around in his chest before being banished by a champion of The Raven Queen. That champion turned out to be Varrick’s son, Atlas, who knighted Varrick into The Raven Queen’s order (Session 33).
Quote
“I wish for the wheel of fates to continue to turn.” - Varrick “What if this means that your enemy, the man who murdered your son, is to live while someone like your companion, Sundara, is destined to die? Will you honor fate then?” - Skulk and Shadow of the Voidwing Sisterhood “If it is her will then it will happen.” - Varrick
Varrick was chosen as a champion by Dagen after defeating a kraken and pulling a magical trident from its eye (Session 50). The kraken’s spirit requested that Varrick build a shrine at the bottom of the ocean. Instead to break the curse, Varrick traveled to the Scorched Fang Mountain in the Delmiri Desert and smashed the trident into the mountain. He felt the sorrow of the creature within and was then humorously slapped by an anchor. Dagen told Varrick his opinion (or possibly the truth) about The Raven Queen which Varrick chose to reject. Allara subsequently broke Varrick’s connection to The Raven Queen in a ritual.
Considered leaving the group and settling down in New Calim, after a vision by Cas and talking with Sundara, decided to stay to protect the world from the rebirth of Karsus.
After killing The Bone King once, Varrick and the party exchanged the pieces of the Inevitable with Faraday, who dealt with Elhorn’s clones. Varrick personally killed the last remaining Elhorn in revenge for his son’s death.
