Events
Sundara meets up with her sister Elowen and gives her the Heart of Karsus. Elowen apologizes for her recent behavior and reveals that Faraday promises to leave Sundara and her friends alone. Sundara and Solonor then travel together to Mechanus. Upon arriving, Sundara feels an intoxicating sense of power and perfection. Plugged into the plane, she seamlessly communes with entire structures and rediscovers joy in creation.
Vale travels to New Calim to see Dunsparrow but finds her unreachable. Vale attempts to contact her via Sending and Dream but both attempts fail. After charming her way into the council chambers, Vale surprisingly comes face to face with Duke Oswald Beaumont. Beaumont accuses Vale of poisoning Dunsparrow against him, ruining his empire, and warns him ominously: “You will see me one more time—exactly one more time.” He doesn’t reveal where Dunsparrow is but implies she is being punished for her actions.
Vale narrowly escapes the Duke, and once further away casts Gate to enter Mechanus, asking Sundara to send him to his homeworld. After considering Solonor’s warnings, Sundara casts Dream of the Blue Veil and they arrive in a new world. Vale summons The Traveler and explores a village of changelings, where he is recognized as a “Chosen,” and states that most people find purpose outside of this village and that is the place they eventually call their home. The Traveler helps Vale return to their original changeling body. Cassius then gives Sundara a magical item to travel back to him in the future. The Traveler fires a gun causing Sundara’s spell to end early, sending her and Solonor back to Mechanus and leaving Cas in his world. After giving him a small creature as a gift, Cassius ask The Traveler if he can travel with him for the time being and he agrees.
Sundara and Solonor spend weeks in Mechanus, but as Sundara begins to miss the sun, water, and life on the material plane, they decide to return to Karsus. Settling into a secluded homestead, she takes time processing her life since leaving Valendri while studying the Phaerimm.
Varrick reunites with Sarah and Natasha. Although he initially asks Sarah to leave New Calim, but she insists that there is too much to do and instead asks him to stay and help. Varrick finds out that Natasha blackmailed Barrel Back Bill over his backroom dealings. Varrick gives Barrel Back Bill one month to figure out a way to come clean to Sarah. One morning he takes Natasha hunting and she shows off a new magical bow. Varrick also travels to the Scorched Fang Mountain in the Delmiri Desert to break the curse of the trident he pulled from the kraken. After precariously smashing the trident into the top of the stone mountain, he feels the sorrow of the creature within but then is slapped by a literal anchor.
Samugi discreetly hires a crew to retrieve his cursed crown, which Varrick had thrown into the ocean. Samugi returns to the Hangul Dynasty and discovers that spirits have influenced the ruling class, leading to unrest. He learns that the oni within him is the source of his abilities and he may be inextricably tied to it. After returning to The Icebreaker, he seeks help from Allara, who breaks the curse within his crown but warns that wearing the crown may still be dangerous.
Allara returns to her sisterhood, where Skulks and Shadows praise her for her accomplishments. Laid upon a stone slab, she endures a painful ritual where her arm is gruesomely tattooed. Skulks and Shadows declare, “This is the mark the Raven Queen has chosen for you.”
