After defeating Captain Bentley’s crew in a brutal battle, the Remnants turn their attention to the state of The Icebreaker. The ship has taken significant damage—sections of its dark iron plating are missing, some sunk to the ocean floor, others completely dissolved. Sundara inspects the Fly runes on the starboard side and finds them destroyed along with the clockwork components they were etched upon. When they attempt to take flight, the ship tilts to port, unstable and unpredictable. She updates the crew, making it clear that while they can get airborne, it’s uncertain how safe or sustainable their flight will be.
As they press forward sailing as a standard ship, a dense and unsettling fog rolls in. From within, tiny boats emerge—children scavengers rowing through the mist. They work for the Rust Alley Whalers, picking through the wreckage left behind in the open sea. Although Varrick welcomes them aboard for food, they feistily decline assuming they would be kidnapped.
Sundara learns that Leland can cast Commune with Clockwork, he mentions the soullessness of the connected Clockwork Sentinel. As they move closer to Nindral, Leland warns them of its reputation: a place of bad luck, something about it making his butt pucker. They learn it’s home to a cult devoted to the sea goddess Umberlee—wrathful, beautiful, and deceitful. The crew are more wary of Kozanite pirates and The Remnants take most of the lore as sailor superstition.
The group’s conversation about their next steps is interrupted by Disco, Leland’s nephew. The crew is surprised he would interrupt a discussion between the captains, and he is quickly admonished and dragged away by other crew members. After some deliberation, they decide to sail past Nindral rather than risk navigating the Frost Fingers.
As they pass, a floating shrine box drifts in the water, housing multiple magical items. They learn that an offering is required. Shar throws a goblin overboard, and later, she receives a blessing. During this, a grotesque, squid-like being, elaborately decorated, emerges and wraps itself around the ship. A child appears on deck, urging the rest of Remnants to make further sacrifices. One by one, they throw magic items onto the floating shrine. In return, the child extends an invitation: if the Remnants wish to enter Nindral, they may do so—safely.
