After the unnamed fiend leaves, Sundara and Varrick exchange thoughts about his offer. Sundara admits she has no strong opinion on whether to accept his support, suggesting instead that Varrick consult with Sarah, as this is their home and the decision should be theirs together. Sarah, however, defers to the Remnants, admitting she doesn’t feel suited to lead so many people right now and trusts the group to decide.
Meanwhile, Cassius and Dunsparrow escape the Whispering Tower and make their way to The Icebreaker. Dunsparrow seems surprised and in disbelieve at her freedom. They exchange thought about their experiences. Dunsparrow, apologize for leaving before the Battle of Barrowmoor. She mentions that Oswald Beaumont is going to make sweeping changes to New Calim which will transform the city into an elitist city-state like Brightwater, along with eliminating The Remnants—violently, if necessary. She admits that in their past she always new that Cas left because of The Duke, but she appreciated the trust and care The Duke provided her which is why she kept returning to him. She now emphasizes that The Duke needs to be dealt with permanently.
The Remnants regroup aboard The Icebreaker and continue discussing their options. Dunsparrow warns that The Duke’s vision will inevitably harm innocent people. They debate whether to seek the fiend’s support or fight independently. Samugi proposes requesting a royal-to-royal audience, as King Chedong, to prevent the queen’s attack. Dunsparrow points out that Samugi must first emerge from exile to declare an alliance or oppose her takeover. The group considers solidifying Samugi’s claim to kingship before the next encounter with the queen. They plan to fend off the attack tomorrow in collaboration with The Sea of Swords and then figure Samugi’s royalty status for a long term solution.
Later, Sundara returns home to gather her armor and spellcasting supplies. She asks for Solonor’s thoughts on Beaumont, and he describes him as an insecure schemer who sees himself as a master swordsman and sorcerer despite being mediocre at both. Beaumont’s ego is his most exploitable weakness, though it also makes him unpredictable and prone to risky decisions to protect his image. Solonor warns her not to underestimate him. Before leaving Sundara gives him one half of a clockwork compass pair.
Back on the ship, Sundara cast control weather, creating a storm 5 miles around The Mortal Promise. As the battle begins, a massive draconic figure approaches and four operatives descend onto the ship, while a black-armored dragon and a knight in obsidian armor swoop by and thee battle begins.
