Backstory
Cassius is a changeling child, gifted to a couple during a time of struggle by The Traveler after they prayed for his aid. Adopted into the Manath family, he was raised as a noble in their castle. The family owned a prestigious college in Brightwater until it was seized by Duke Oswald Beaumont, who destroyed the institution and smeared the Manath family name.
Cassius had a complicated relationship with Dunsparrow Beaumont, Oswald’s daughter, and maybe even considered marriage at one point. His entanglement with her led to a break-in at the Beaumont manor with Varrick and Japheth, which resulted in his imprisonment in Ironford Prison.
Prior Events
Helped in the battle of The Remnants against Oswald Beaumont but chose not to deal any final damage after he fell unconscious. He watched as Varrick dealt the final blow to Oswald (Session 21). Dunsparrow disguised as The Duke, helped Cassius and the group be pardoned from their crimes. Cassius withheld the truth of his death until later on.
After indulging in a Spark drink and identifying a twisted gun-like object of otherworldly origin at Alexi Faraday’s charity ball, Cassius met The Traveler, who showed him visions of the world’s destruction by the Phaerimm (Session 29). Cassius also grew concerned about his sister Chalice’s disappearance, as divination magic failed to locate her (Session 31).
The moment after the death of his closest friend Varrick, Cassius reached out to Alexi Faraday offering The Harmonic Resonator in exchange for help. After reviving Varrick, Faraday takes Cassius to The Shattered Spire and lets him take an artifact for a fair trade. Cassius takes the interdimensional twisted gun he examined earlier. Although the object feels inert he has the feeling that in another world it would have been an extremely powerful weapon, he decides to attune to the item (Session 33), he later learns that the weapon was pulled from The World Tree and was a companion to The Traveler (Session 45). On a trip to Valendri he feels that his magic and gun are ‘more at home.’
After breaking Chalice out of Ironford Prison, he returns to New Calim and reunites the Manath family. While in New Calim he also meets up with Dunsparrow. During the visit she initially seems cold and distant but warms to Cassius and kisses him. While dancing in the foyer of The Whispering Tower, Cassius hides his stone-cold face and then leaves without saying, “I love you” (Session 38).
Current Events
One of his changeling forms face, Valesca Vale, appears on the ship and threatens the group members loved ones if they don’t present themselves to The Bone King. Cassius thought Valesca was dead which was the reason he took her form.
Reunites with Dunsparrow at one of her properties, Barrowmoor Manor. Initially, feelings were tense when she explained to him that she was responsible for the final death of her father to protect Cassius. They reconcile and spend the evening together. She then admits to being a part of The Circle of Ruin and Thistle and the upcoming plan for assassination of Varrick, Cas tells her that he will do what it takes to protect her. During this time he witnesses apocalyptic visions of the destruction of Karsus, sent by The Traveler. Dunsparrow tries to save Cassius from the oncoming onslaught of The Bone King after he discovers their location, but Cassius forces her to let him go back to help the rest of the group.
After the group decides to take some time for their personal lives, he tries to reconnect with Dunsparrow again. He learns that Duke Oswald Beaumont is alive and has placed Dunsparrow in ‘time-out’ for her actions against him. He spends time in the Feywild with The Traveler and upon returning mounts a daring rescue of Dunsparrow. Dunsparrow expressed regret for her past choices and warned Cassius of Oswald’s plans to transform New Calim into an elitist city-state and eliminate The Remnants.
