Sundara creates a teleportation circle and sends the rest of the group back to The Icebreaker, staying behind with Solonor. Back on the ship, Samugi takes a moment to talk with Leopold and gets answers regarding the Hangul Dynasty and his past. Varrick asks Otiluke Organdorf for assistance visiting New Calim and stays the night with Sarah Stoneheart. Cassius spends time reading books from Dunsparrow, including two books written by Oswald Beaumont documenting The Circle of Ruin and Thistle and their ability to draw power from decay, referencing a Queen who personifies decay and rot. Allara visits Thaunia, who is locked in the brig and drawing with blood on the walls. Using True Sight, she notices a demonic creature attached to Thaunia. Thaunia seems disinterested in having a prolonged conversation but admits she was paid by Moujin to capture Samugi.

In his room, Samugi discusses with Leopold the history of King Chedon, known as King of The Black Sky. He was the unifier and creator of the Hangul Dynasty, bringing order to Kozah through his battles. His final fate was unknown, with rumors suggesting he made a deal with a devil, was always crazy, or was assassinated. He disappeared about 15 years ago. General Jugaem, Samugi’s brother and father to Moujin did not ascend to the throne for an unknown reason thus Moujin is the de facto leader by council as the previous king was never announced dead.

In the morning, Varrick and Sundara both return to the ship. She advocates for heading to Langston as soon as possible to finish off Elhorn. Allara and Samugi discuss what they have learned about Thaunia and Samugi’s relationship with Moujin. Allara advocates for Thaunia’s release, whether or not she is able to heal her, which causes some protest within the group. They decide to move forward and kill Elhorn once and for all. Varrick contacts Faraday, who destroys all of Elhorn’s nearly immediately.

Cassius visits Valesca Vale, who is being guarded by Nick. Cas notices that Valesca bit off her own tongue and is unconscious, near death. After healing her, he removes her from the shackles, but she quickly tries to stab him with a broken piece of metal. Cassius casts a spell that traps her soul in a box and shifts his soul into her body, leaving his own body limp and catatonic. Varrick hears the commotion, arrives at the scene, and realizes Cassius is now inhabiting Valesca’s body. After explaining the situation to the group, Allara is able to regenerate Vale’s tongue.

The group moves to find Elhorn, invading Langston with their ship and destroying The Bone Hunters’ shipyard. Varrick spots Elhorn and runs across multiple ships to attack him, striking sown with his trident. However, a gnome intervenes, casting a spell to take Elhorn’s place and block the attack. Multiple gnomes appear on the ship and bow to Samugi, presenting a crown to him. Samugi tries to figure out why The Hangul Gnomes have been coming after him and they request his return from exile stating that the people need him. When Samugi questions them further, they comment on how well Samugi has subdued “the beast” and they forcibly place the crown on Samugi’s head which transforms him into The King of the Black Sky.
