The operation began with an attempt at infiltration rather than direct assault. Enoch and Charles entered the district first with the intention of acquiring access to the shipyards. Charles succeeded through confidence and a borrowed clipboard, persuading a worker to surrender a timecard. Enoch attempted the same through less conventional means and was immediately noticed. Mazarin intervened before the situation escalated, invoking her authority as a representative of the Black Ledger and compelling cooperation through magic. The explanation was accepted, if only reluctantly.
Charles and Enoch proceeded deeper into the district under the guise of inspectors. Claiming affiliation with the FETC proved an immediate mistake. Rather than granting authority, it attracted suspicion. Guards escorted them further inward under watch, accompanied by goat-headed soldiers and knights bearing heraldry. Anticipating the danger, Mazarin rendered both of us invisible. We boarded the transport unnoticed.
As the gondola reached its destination, the operation abandoned any remaining pretense of subtlety. I cast my spell as we arrived. Enoch threw himself into the water below. Charles positioned himself for a high yield shot before following with considerably less grace. Mazarin disappeared into the complex to scout while I took to the air.
The reconnaissance proved invaluable. From above and below we were able to piece together the structure of the operation. The shipyards were supported by fuel depots, barracks, and logistical infrastructure, but the true centerpiece was far more disturbing: a kraken held beneath the facility and forced to labor through magical domination.
While observing the forge, we were confronted by a towering demonic woman stationed atop one of the central structures. Combat followed. Mazarin detonated the fuel depot, throwing the facility into chaos. The battle carried us to the summit of the forge itself, where repeated attacks forced us into a defensive engagement. Eventually Mazarin succeeded in banishing the creature, granting us a brief opportunity to complete our objective.
We destroyed the arcane control apparatus and began dismantling the enchantments binding the kraken. The runic circlet upon its head had been carefully designed to dominate a creature of impossible scale. Dispelling it proved difficult even with Enoch and Charles working toward the same goal from below.
As the final restraints weakened, additional hostiles emerged. Revenants appeared throughout the facility.Mazarin’s father, Corvis Therin, may have been involved, though the situation deteriorated too rapidly to confirm. By that point, my priority had shifted to extracting Mazarin and myself before we sustained further injury. I informed Charles and Enoch that completion of the objective would fall to them.
According to Enoch’s account, the circlet was forcibly broken moments later. The ancient creature stirred beneath the water. The kraken tore the control band from its own flesh with such force that it mutilated itself in the process. Better injury than servitude. Better freedom than obedience. The creature vanished into the depths soon afterward.
Whatever damage we inflicted upon the shipyards may prove significant. Whatever was awakened by the kraken’s liberation may prove considerably more so. The consequences have not yet revealed themselves.
