Fischer rapidly exited the command tent after declaring my death necessary for Conscriptus’ unification. His confidence implied significant premeditation. Moments later hundreds of Steel Covenant soldiers surrounded the encampment.
Mazarin, Sal, Enoch, Charles entered just after. There was little time for coordination before the first barrage struck. The tent’s fabric, command-grade enchanted canvas used in Armada field operations, mitigated much of the initial impact.
Mazarin advanced immediately, casting a primal form of magic that seemed to draw from instinct. Enoch intercepted those attempting to breach through our defensive line. Sal deployed wide area magic, while Charles provided cover fire. Coordination was efficient given the circumstances.
After consuming an unknown potion, Charles appeared to be arguing with three other versions of himself while an illusory projection of an elderly, partially clothed wizard identified as “Otiluke” delivered an incoherent account concerning the end of the world and a figure named Karsus. The purpose of this phenomenon remains unclear, though it seemed more nuisance than threat.
During combat, I experienced interference with the Ledgermen sigils originally grafted to me at the onset of service. Shortly thereafter, I heard familiar voices, Celeste among them, alongside other fragments of communication I had apparently missed. I dismissed this and maintained focus, distraction here can mean death.
Alongside Enoch, I worked to disable those who penetrated our radius. However, the auditory manifestations persisted and intensified. Five voices soon harmonized: the Matriarchs. Katharis, Lysandra, Maelthrumm, Vorynth, and even Valantis. They were chanting, channeling spell energy toward my position with calculated precision. The language and cadence implying the opening of a gate.
Whether this gate leads to escape or an arrival, I can only assume my mother would not go to such lengths to see me dead. My utility outweighs my cost; I must live long enough to face the Matriarchs and prove it.
