The Holy Rail arrived in Verdania after the successful extraction of Professor Alderdice and the neutralization of the revenant aboard the train. I observed Marrion waiting at the platform before we disembarked. She guided us to a private overlook above the city, away from public observation. Mazarin spoke first. Her demand was focused: she accused the organization of withholding information and constructing our assignments under concealed intent.
Marrion responded by revealing her deception. Our formation was not an official state program and that the Spymaster may not even be aware of our operational existence. Instead, she described an experimental selection process using the Oracle’s dissidence-coefficient framework. Individually, each of us was assessed as a relatively low rebellion risk. Collectively, however, we produced a measured value of 1.00, a coefficient capable of devastation to The Empire. This was all under the organization known as The Shattered Covenant.
Marrion offered a binary choice: surrender her to restore our prior standing or join the Shattered Covenant in open rebellion. The decision was made without extended deliberation. We chose insurrection. I registered the gravity of the choice but experienced no internal hesitation sufficient to warrant documentation.
We made our way into Verdania which itself operates under controlled behavioral conditioning. Dream Lotus is distributed through food and environmental exposure, functioning as a long-term microdosed psychoactive agent that promotes obedience. History dictates this was implemented under Thalia the Greywarden, Prophet of Verdania.
We visited Kessaria’s shop, the Root and Rind Collective. Charles purchased several items. Enoch engaged in extended conversation with Kessaria that appeared socially reciprocal and mildly flirtatious.
Additional information was exchanged in private discussion. Mazarin confirmed that during the revenant encounter she heard her father, Corvis Therin’s, voice. The message directed her to withdraw and avoid involvement, implying internal knowledge of the operation. Mazarin reported that she had not heard her father’s voice since joining the Ledgermen. She expressed frustration at his contact.
Marrion disclosed that she originated from the Divinorum region and her father serves as a diplomat. Other conversations touched on academic rivalries and research projects associated with political violence.
We prepared to depart Verdania at first light. I note that my own emotional response to the Covenant’s proposition was minimal. This is not unexpected. I was trained to treat ideology as a variable rather than an identity. Still, the act of choosing rebellion is not without consequence, even if the consequence is not yet felt.
