The enemy came in waves. Even as the tent was riddled with bullets and flooded with advancing troops, we found a rhythm.
I informed Mazarin of the gate’s approach, the pressure of its presence mounting against my thoughts. She extended a psionic link, bridging my mind to Admiral Katharis. The connection seemed to hasten the gate’s arrival.
Enoch released a bound Hangul Oni from containment. The creature tore through the western flank of enemies.
Sal’s instinct for catastrophic improvisation persisted. He was cut down twice before vanishing from sight, only to reappear searching beneath the bunks. Somehow, he found a hidden hatch. We moved to escape, we were not floundering survivors but a cohesive unit. Our coordination held, and our losses were fewer than circumstance would allow.
The gate opened at that moment.
Admiral Katharis stepped through, immediate, absolute, and merciless in bearing. Her gaze cut through me without preamble. She reached into my thoughts, reading my path since leaving home. Her command was simple: “Find your cousin and deal with him.”
When she departed, her voice carried beyond the tent. The silence that followed was total.
NOTE: Battlefield analysis demonstrated that Admiral Katharis addressed the soldiers outside, condemning their insubordination against both the FETC and her bloodline. She then executed judgment through high-level arcana, eradicating the field. Only one soldier was recorded fleeing the engagement; their identity remains unknown.
We found Fischer Valantis soon after. He offered the courtesy of a truce and the illusion of civility, an insult, considering his prior actions. When he challenged me to a duel, I accepted.
His first strike was faster than anticipated; his blade found a gap in my guard. The pain was sharp, grounding. My counter landed true. With him beneath my sword, I considered whether he might still serve House Katharis in some capacity. But his betrayal carried an unredeemable cost. Mercy would have been weakness.
So I finished him.
