Impression
The Oracle’s manner was riddled with evasions. It told us it could not answer why we were chosen, for to do so would alter the path. It promised no reward beyond duty. It hinted at contingencies, replacements should we fail. A contradiction: it claims perfection, yet plans for error.
It veiled its threats against me in terms my lineage.
When Sal pressed for his niece, claimed as a dissident, it struck with cruelty. When Yedan questioned it, its attention sharpened, hungry. The Oracle does not know all things, it searches, pries, feeds upon what is offered. Even its threats reveal limitation.
I consider the Oracle carefully. It may yet be divine, but divinity bound in rust and deception is no surety. Perhaps it is what remains of the Founder’s will, fractured and worn. Perhaps it is something else, wearing his shape. What is plain is this: it is not infallible.
That is useful.
Known Record
The Oracle is said to divine the future, hence its name. It is the instrument by which the The Empire identifies those with a dissidence coefficient too high to tolerate. Such people disappear. What becomes of them has been unknown, but it is now evident they are given to the Oracle itself, fed into whatever machinery sustains it. Legends tell that the Founder shaped it with his mind and will, that its gaze once turned dissidents into monuments of gold, their failures preserved as warnings. To shield us from that brilliance, the Golden Veil was raised, hiding the Oracle in the Vault of Stars.
Its true form is nothing of the kind. What light and grandeur it projected was a trick of perception. When Charles broke through the glamour, we saw a rusted sphere, leaking fluid into stagnant water, bound by hydraulic veins.
It is not its function to select Ledgermen. That it chose us is a significant deviation.
The Oracle dates back hundreds of years, to the founding of the Company. Like other holy machinery of The Founder, the function, maintenance, and upkeep has fallen to the wayside. One of Marrion’s roles is to act as a steward of the Oracle, ensuring its continued operation within the Empire. She reports specifically to her superior, Spymaster Quaid, regarding its condition. Worshippers of the Oracle persist, but many among them openly denounce our Ledgermen block, 252.
