Impression

Harsh, prone to escalation, and unpracticed in restraint. Hotheaded in word and posture. Still, it would be inaccurate to call him without discipline; it simply lacks refinement. His instincts are sharp. A capable marksman. Notably experienced in hostile terrain and direct engagement.

He was the first to assume leadership when we met, which speaks either to reflexive confidence or practiced command.

Known Record

Former soldier of the 181st Infantry Division, active during the Delmiri Desert operations. Survived a known ambush by Hangul Shadow Monks; reportedly the only member of his unit to return. Official dispatches leave open the possibility that his spotter survived.

Demonstrates high competence in arid and natural environments; limited experience in urban settings or clandestine operations.

Previously affiliated with the Steel Covenant. Records suggest he extended warnings to enemy populations (Ashborne population in The Embermaw) before strikes for which he underwent Class-4 memory alignment with layered remediation prior to reassignment. When asked directly, he stated he does not recall his childhood. I did not press further.

I have found myself warming to Charles. Despite our vastly different stations in life, he has begun treating me with a steady respect I cannot ignore. Fighting side by side has a way of erasing certain distinctions, covering one another’s flanks in the press of battle is its own equalizer. He also seems to leave deliberate space for me to step forward.

We discovered on our mission to find Block 233 that Charles once lived among the Ashborne, who welcomed him into their society. He married and built a life before being taken by the Empire in some manner. The Ashborne presumed him dead; his loss weighed heavily on the community. His own memory has since been realigned, and he now shows little lasting sentiment toward either the life he led or its erasure.

NOTE (Editorial Addenda)

He is haunted by visions of a woman with sad eyes asking him, “Then what type of man are you Charles Brand?”
